It's a beautiful day
But only if you're indoors with the heating on. It's snowing outside, which is getting to be a rare sight here, so I'm enjoying the view. Strangely enough the outside temperature is now lower than during most of the winter. Go figure.

For my further enjoyment, I've bought a bread machine (or whatever you call it in English). All you need to do is throw in the ingredients, choose the right program and hit the "on" switch. It then starts churning away making the dough and a little over three hours later the house smells of freshly baked bread. Bliss.

Graphic woes
I've bought a shiny new ATI Sapphire X1650 PRO graphics card with 512 MB of memory, screwed it into the computer and waited for graphic magic to happen. Which it failed to do. Ubuntu doesn't recognize my card and apparently wants nothing to do with it either. Every time I start up the computer, I get a message saying it can't detect the card. Then I click continue or configure, it doesn't really matter which, and in both cases I end up with a maximum screen resolution of 600 by 800. Suffice it to say that this isn't very comfortable. I've already let Ubuntu do its thing with unsupported drivers and it hasn't made the slightest bit of difference. I've downloaded the driver from the ATI website, but then when I restarted the computer, the screen stayed dark. Another restart, and it went back to not recognizing the card. I guess this is one of those thingies where you have to recompile the kernel or some such. Can anyone tell me how to do that, or point me to a manual for n00bs like me?

ETA: found an answer on the Dutch Ubuntu discussion group, my screen is now back to normal. However, graphic magic still isn't happening. Ubuntu refuses to upgrade the visual effects from none to extra. Hmph...

Looks like I'm all set
I've managed to import all my messages from Eudora into Evolution by doing it a file at a time. That doesn't work for the filters and the address book, but then again a little work never killed anyone (I think).

So far, my impression of Ubuntu is really good. The installation process is far superior to the Windows one (although I can only compare to the Windows XP installation, so YMMV), and copied all the files I was using under windows. I was already using firefox, so not much of a difference there. I was a bit surprised that those settings weren't copied, though. Evolution seems to be doing just as good a job as Eudora and can do a few more tricks besides. And lots of free games! And better games! And being able to install stuff without having to restart the computer!

The only thing I've found so far that Windows made easier is the special characters, which you could usually get with two keystrokes. Maybe there's a setting in Ubuntu for that, too, but I've yet to find it. But it's certainly not worth going back to Windows for.

For now, I'm keeping the dual boot thingy as it is, in case there are still things on the Windows disk that haven't been copied yet. I can't really think of anything at the moment, but I'm afraid that ten seconds after clearing that disk, I'll find that there was still something there that I really, really needed.

It's getting better all the time
Got my bookmarks and history back by tricking FEBE. Y'see, when I did it the regular way, it looked like there were no files at all in the backup directory. So I went to the backup directory without the browser, opened the box icon it contained and copied all that was there one directory up, in other words: besides the box. Then tried the FEBE tool again and lo and behold, it could now find both the bookmarks and the browser history. Not the passwords, though, but that's only a minor inconvenience.

Now to get my email copied from Eudora. I've not yet tried to tackle that, but I'm sure I can get it to work sometime. In the meantime, Ubuntu works faster than windows. Not having to restart the system every time an update has been installed is kinda nice, too. And it has Samegame! My favorite game of all time! There are a few things I still need to find out, though.

For instance, how do I get an e with dots on top or any other mark? With windows, I just typed ' plus e and that did the trick. But both that and Alt plus 130 don't seem to work in Ubuntu. Can anybody tell me how I can fix that?

Partial success
Have installed both the hard drive and Ubuntu. But Firefox won't copy the settings from the Firefox version I was using with XP. Can I just copy the settings? And if so, what file do I copy and where am I suppose to put it?

Tomorrow I'm going to be looking into email clients. I'm currently using evolution, which seems to suit my needs just fine, but I'd like to know if there's an email client which has a Linux version and can copy settings and messages from Eudora.

Help would be much appreciated.

The art of procrastination
I've bought a shiny new hard drive. I've downloaded Ubuntu. Making a backup of my current XP disc is a matter of minutes. So why can't I get myself to open up the computer, insert the new hard drive as master, turn the other one into the slave, and then install Ubuntu? I want to do it. Nothing can really go wrong what with me actually making a backup just before I remove even a single screw from the back of the computer. So why do I keep finding other things to do, like blogging about it?

Maybe I'll do it tomorrow.

A farewell to obesity
I did it! from now on, I'll be merely overweight, rather than obese. And if I manage to lose another 17 kilograms, even the overweight bit will be gone. But even now, statistically speaking I'm much better off when it comes to health risks such as diabetes, heart disease and so on. Which quite practically may also be helpful if I want some kind of insurance or a new mortgage. Not that I'm thinking of getting such at the moment, but it's nice to know.

As for the icon: a colleague celebrated her birthday yesterday and I had a tiny slice of cake. Believe you me, that tastes ever so much better after four months of dieting than if you have it all the time.

Ugly Betty reviewette
I've seen Ugly Betty twice now. Unfortunately for this show, it's been programmed right after Sex and the City, which brings me to the following question: is intelligence-implosion a real word? Because it's the word that popped into my mind after seeing that particular combination.

In any case, I think "The Devil Wears Prada" did the same thing a whole lot better.

Have to meme

Gakked from several folks on my flist:

Heh, I did score on weirdness. Now I have to go buy some DVDs with two, because I've never seen him before. I did watch the first series of four last sunday when I should have been watching The Way Back for the current lyst discussion. Oops, busted... But hey, it did have great dialogs and dodgy special effects. That should count for something. I also loved the King Kong reference. Sarah doesn't really make a good screamer when the giant robot picks her up, but she did her best.

On the bus
Today on the bus homewards, I heard a French teacher tell her fellow teacher an utterly brilliant trick to deal with students who haven't made their homework: she lets them get away with it, if (and only if) they give her an excuse for it in perfect French. They only get to use each excuse once and they only get one dead pet (no "my dog died" followed by "my cat died") and one dead relative. After hearing that, one student said (in French): "all right then, my goat peed on my book." "Very good," she answered. "Really?" he asked, very surprised. "That's right," she said, "pisser is indeed the correct French for to pee."

As for the icon: It's nowhere near my birthday, but I fell off the wagon diet-wise and have regained one kg of the 16 I've lost so far. So starting tomorrow I'm going to be really stern with myself again. After all, I still have 22 kg's to go!

Advice asked from the folks down under
BTW, is New Zealand down under, too?

Er, that's not the advice I wanted to ask for. This is: a colleague of mine is going to quit from work next month in order to spend a year backpacking through Australia, New Zealand and parts of Asia. Now I know at least two aussies and one kiwi are reading this, so I've promised to ask: is there any place in your countries he just absolutely positively has to go see? I'm sure he knows about all the usual tourist haunts, but is there anything else that'll make the trip one to remember? He's not worried about roughing it, so having to spend a night in the open to catch a breathtaking sight is probably not a problem. And how about cultural stuff? Anything that regularly goes on or that's going to happen during the next year that's really special?

Pietje update
I've been to the vet just now, and she's biopsied the lump. There's no fluid in it at all, so it seems to consist of solid cells. That may indicate an inflammation, but since Pietje doesn't have a fever and the lump doesn't hurt him at all, she thinks that's unlikely. The results of the biopsy will be back within a week. Let's hope it's good news.

Meanwhile, thanks to you all for your kind words and positive thoughts.

I found a lump under Pietje's chin yesterday. Since it's still here this evening, I'm taking him to the vet tomorrow to have it looked at. Keep your fingers crossed that it's just a big zit or something...

Riddle me this, oh wise flist
I own a satellite tuner that has a dual tuner. It also has a harddisk that I use to record shows I don't want to watch at the time they're being broadcast. Now here's the thing:

1. At around eight this evening, I started watching (not recording) a movie.
2. At half past eight, the tuner started recording John Doe. The movie I was watching stayed on my TV screen.
3. At nine, the tuner started recording The 4400. The movie I was watching stayed on my TV screen, the recording of John Doe continued without pause.

After the movie and both recordings had finished, I checked the listing of recorded items. Both John Doe and The 4400 had been recorded in its entirety.

How is this possible, when I'm really sure this device only has two tuners?

Woohoo, the new modem works!
Doesn't this posting look all shiny and new? All that's left now is to buy a long cable to connect a phone in my tenant's room to the Voip outlet of the modem. I'll get that done tomorrow and if that connection works properly as well, then from then on my new tenant will have her own phone connection which will be a lot cheaper for her than the mobile phone she now uses.

I still don't think much of the manufacturer's helpdesk or  their website, but the stuff they sell does work really well and the modem I have bought comes with all possible bells and whistles. Plus, this brand has been recommended to me by helpdesk people from two ISP's, both of which are known for their technical superiority over other ISP's. I think that counts for a lot.

I am so royally pissed off
I ordered a modem/router with VoiP functionality from zyxel. At least, the salesperson said it was a router. Turns out, you can only use it for one computer, if you want more computers to use the modem, you need to get a different device with what they call a switch.

Now I happen to have a little box which the manufacturer (Sweex) calls a router. You can use it to connect FOUR computers to your modem. The same for sitecom and any other brand I've seen so far. If I walk into any store in the Netherlands that sells computer supplies and ask for a router, then that's what I'll get. But the salesperson from zyxel feels otherwise. According to him those devices are switches, no matter what those other manufacturers call them and a router is a whole 'nother thingie. And I am obviously a very dim person for not understanding this. But he ever so graciously allowed me to send the thingy I can't use back to them so I can get one that is useful. How very nice of him.... If they weren't selling such a great product, they could have taken their modem and folded it until it was all pointy and, well, you know.

Never mind that their website doesn't even mention it if any modem on it only works with a digital phone signal, when I (and most people over here) have an analog line....

And I blame all you guys! Wibbling on about Doctor Who, constantly reminding me of its greatness. So I surfed to Amazon to see if they had any DVD's with four on it. And they do. Boy do they ever. Apparently every single Doctor Who episode that ever aired is out on DVD. And someone has made one of those helpful lists with all the episodes of four, where you can order them all by clicking just one single button.

So now they're on their way. Not a good idea budget wise, but boy am I ever going to enjoy watching them. But I'd better stay away from Amazon for at least a year after this...

Down some more
Well, I've lost another kilo thanks to Sonja. That's two since last monday. Although part of it may have to do with sweating over my computer. My tenant installed a program called Pando on Friday evening, and since then the internet and several other things wouldn't work for me anymore. Even a system recovery didn't work. I've had to reinstall Windows from scratch (not a bad idea, anyway, every few years) and then call the ISP's help desk to get my settings straight. Looks like there was a problem with my IP-address. How this program could f#ck that up I'll never know.

The funny thing is: my tenant has had this program installed on her own computer for more than a year. She's got exactly the same version of windows, too. The only reason she used my computer this time (with my permission!), was because her computer was broken and is being repaired. It's a laptop, and I don't know anything about laptop-hardware.

I know Linux is probably better at not letting new programs screw the old ones up, but the last time I tried to install it (several years ago, the Suse version) I didn't manage to get a connection to the internet started. I'm just not that interested in spending hours trying to get the thing to work. Let's face it, the installation program is one thing Windows does better than Linux. Also, every single piece of hardware has a windows driver, and hardly ever a linux one. And once again, I'm not interested in spending hours scouring the net in order to get the thing to work, when I could just use the manufacturer's CD.

Gakked from several friends:

So, jthijsen, your LiveJournal reveals...

You are... 0% unique and 0% herdlike.
When it comes to friends you are lonely. In terms of the way you relate to people, you are keen to please.

Your writing style (based on a recent public entry) is conventional.

Your overall weirdness is: 10

(The average level of weirdness is: 27.
You are weirder than 14% of other LJers.)

Find out what your weirdness level is!

Well, at least I'm not herdlike. As for the lonely bit, that's only because I've only just started here. But I could do with a little more weirdness.

However, I don't understand how I can be neither unique nor herdlike. Aren't those supposed to be opposites?

Going down...
I've gone and started a diet! Something I vowed I'd never do again after the last attempt (about ten years ago) resulted in me first losing 15 kilo's and then gaining 25 kilo's again. But now there's a new diet that's all the rage in Holland and I actually know several people who've really lost a lot of weight following it. Last wednesday, I met a former colleague who was half the man he used to be, so to speak. When I complimented him on it, he spoke the magic words: Sonja Bakker. The very same day I bought her books.

Sonja Bakker is a nutritionist who's translated her years of experience in a book. Also not unimportant: she used to be too heavy herself, then became a nutritionist and then started shedding weight. She is now quite slim and AFAIK has been for years. Not unlike a certain Dr. Atkins... Also, the meals she prescribes are quite balanced and varied, which means healthy.

So since last monday I eat only what her book tells me to eat. It's an easy diet to follow, I don't get hungry until less than half an hour before I'm supposed to eat again anyway. And in just two days, I've already lost a kilo. Which leaves 34 more... But I'm hopeful.

I'll let you know on these pages if the diet continues to work. And more importantly, if I can stick with it.
