Ah, Avon, you put it so well|
In a discussion group about cats (what else) someone asked if cats could see ghosts. Which of course caused someone to state "I'm as down to earth as they come, but in my house an old lady died and these totally inexplicable things now happen all the time."
So I asked her if she'd checked a few obvious things. At that point, the atmosphere turned somewhat hostile. I was accused of treating her like a dumb blonde (I hadn't) and got the old standby: "Who are you to say what we should believe?" Ah, yes, of course, asking down to earth questions absolutely comes down to that. And then came that golden oldie: "We're entitled to our opinion, you know!"
At which point I fondly remembered Avon and his answer to that one...
Current Mood: annoyed
I have a friend who believes in ghosts and timeslips (don't ask) and posts about them, and I just ignore it. It makes her happy.
The thing is, people have died in most houses in Europe, and there aren't any phenomena. People see what they want to.
As for cats, I think they just see tiny insects or dust motes; they have better eyesight than us. :-)
One of the people there replied something along the lines of "Oh yes, there's definitely something strange going on here as well, because my TV set sometimes switches off all by itself and sometimes the sound goes up or down, too, without any of us touching the remote.
My suggestion that she start looking through the ads for a new TV or call the store if it was still under warranty didn't seem to go down too well, either. And I only just remembered that there are kids who love to point a universal remote at windows and look at the reactions of the people inside.
Why would they even want to think some dead person is interfering with their TV? So bizarre. I suggest it's serviced as well. :-)

I always go with a lady by the title of the Marquise du Deffand...
"Do I believe in ghosts? No, but I'm afraid of them."
But yes, Avon's answer to that is wonderful (ahh, the charm of characters who say precisely what we would like to :)
Isn't that why we love him so dearly?

Fool, never attempt to use your brain while engaged in a social bonding exercise. You'll kill us all!
I'm feeling properly chastised...
