Sergeant Detritus lives
Ultimate weapons is on TV here now and though I'm not really watching (I've been playing minesweeper until Dirty Jobs starts), the description of the effect of one of the weapons strongly reminded me of Sergeant Detritus' favorite weapon, a siege bow which pretty much obliterates everything he fires it at. And then one of the military types described what happened when they used that weapon to stop a vehicle from running a checkpoint (they suspected it to be wired with explosives and that did indeed turn out to be the case). His words were something like "We then fired the weapon at the cab of the vehicle and it had a very detrimental (sic) effect on the people inside." Which could have been the Sergeant again, reporting that the miscreants had ceased their bad behavior on account of them feeling a little poorly.
Sometimes I think Terry Pratchett must have based his Night Watch characters on real live persons.
